Homenagem e introdução/ Honour and introduction
Homenageio, com esta preciosa postagem do meu blog, meu saudoso pai, Sr. Darcy Franke, que amava Charlie Chaplin e possuía muitos filmes do grande cômico; como passatempo também filmava eventos de sua família. Nas lembranças da infância, guardo as dos aniversários em casa quando ele projetava filmes do "Carlitos" para alegria das crianças çresentes. E não só, amigo e benfeitor do Lar de Meninos do Exército de Salvação em Pelotas-RS, amava levar "Carlitos" para mostrar seus filmes aos meninos órfãos daquela entidade. Eu gostava de acompanhá-lo, sem imaginar que um dia me tornaria um oficial salvacionista.
Meu pai faleceu no mesmo ano de Chaplin, em 1977.

I dedicate this post to my father, Mr Darcy Franke, who loved and had many of Charlie Chaplin's old movies and who also as a hobby did film his own family's events. I remember our birthdays parties and him showing to many children of our family those funny movies. He also showed them to the orphans Boys' Home in Pelotas-RS. I used to enjoy visiting the Home with him, without imagining that one day I would become a SA officer.
My father died in the same year as Chaplin, in 1977.

No verão de 2008 viajei até Vevey, na Suíça Francesa, por saber que lá viveu Chaplin com sua numerosa família. Visitei o cemitério onde ele e Oona foram enterrados, mas não a mansão onde moraram, em Corsier-sur-Vevey, pelo fato de que na ocasião não estar aberta ao público. Este ano meu sonho foi realizado e visitei o Museu Chaplin, aberto no ano passado para comemorar os 127 anos que faria Carlitos se estivesse vivo. (Veja abaixo o link respectivo)
During the summer of 2008 I visited Vevey, in French Switzerland, where Chaplin lived with his big family. I visited the cemetery where he and his wife Oona were buried, but their mansion in Corsier-sur-Vevey was not opened yet to the public. This year my dream was fulfilled and I visited the Chaplin Museum, inaugurated last year to mark Charlie's 127 anniversary. (See link bellow)

Muitos turistas alugam carros, o que nunca é o meu caso / Many tourists rent a car, which never is my case.
Viajando sempre com baixo orçamento, pego as conduções de cada local, o que é super mais interessante por entrar em contato com as pessoas./ Traveling always with a low budget, I take local buses, which is more fun allowing me to get in touch with local citizens. y.

e Tão logo adentrei o local, adquiri meu bilhete da terceira idade e logo estava no Museu / As soon as I entered the place, I got my ticket "elderly" type and walked to the Museum.
A fim de evitar longas legendas, penso que os fãs de Chaplin logo identificarão seus filmes etc./ In order to avoid long legends, I think that Charlie's fans will identify his films anyway.
O laboratório onde até o cheiro de celulóide lembrou-me de meu pai e seus filmes (não só de Chaplin).../ The smell of celluloid in the laboratory made me remember my father and his films (not only Charlie's)...

- A mansão onde moraram/ Manoir du Ban
Em setembro de 1952, Charlie Chaplin estava indo para a Europa para divulgar seu filme "Luzes da Ribalta" quando soube que os E.U.A. haviam suspendido seu visto americano por causa do "McCarthyismo", que o acusou de comunista. A família Chaplin precisava de um novo endereço na Europa e, por conselho de seu irmão Sydney Chaplin, eles visitaram a Suíça. Charlie se apaixonou pelo país, por sua paz e quietude e pelas leis de impostos; assim adquiriram a propriedade chamada Manoir de Ban, em Vevey, em 31 de dezembro de 1952.
In September 1952, Charlie Chaplin was on his way to Europe to promote his film Limelight when he learned that USA had revoked his visa because of "McCarthyism" (that accused him of a comunist). The Chaplin family needed a new address in Europe and, on the advice of Charlie's brother Sydney, they visited Switzerland. The film-maker fell in love with the countryside, the peace and quiet and with the tax laws, and purchased the vacant Manoir de Ban on December 31, 1952.
A família se mudou em 6 de janeiro de 1953. Embora tivessem adquirido a mansão mobiliada, os arquitetos Burnat e Nicati renovaram-na e reorganizaram o interior da mansão em estilo neoclássico de 1840, rodeada de árvores centenárias.
Oona estava grávida de seu quinto filho durante sua chegada à Suíça, e o casal teve oito filhosno total./ Interessante que seus filhos estudaram em escolas públicas.

The family moved in on January 6, 1953. Although they had bought the
manor furnished, the Chaplin family and their architects Burnat and
Nicati renovated the property and reorganized the interior of the
mansion in neoclassic style of 1840 rounded for centenary trees.
Chaplin's wife Oona was pregnant with their fifth child on their arrival
in Switzerland, and the couple went on to have eight children in total.

Hannah Chaplin e seu famoso filho em 1928, meses antes da morte de Hannah. Percebe-se ao ler sua autobiografia o grande amor que devotava a ela e ao seu meio-irmão Sydney/

Reading his autobiography we notice the great love that he devoted to her and to his half-brother Sydney.
O artista passou uma grande porcentagem de seu tempo trabalhando. Seus filmes "O Rei em Nova York", "A Condessa de Hong Kong" e "The Freak" (que nunca foi filmado) foram escritos em Manoir de Ban. Ele trabalhou inclusive ao piano nas músicas de seus filmes e escreveu sua autobiografia em 1964. Sir Charles e sua esposa Lady Oona foram enterrados no cemitério de Corsier-sur-Vevey/
The artist also spent a large percentage of his time working. The screenplays for his films A King in New York, A Countess from Hong Kong and The Freak (which was never filmed) were written at Manoir de Ban. He reworked the music for his films at the piano and wrote My Autobiography, published in 1964. Sir Charles and his wife Lady Oona are buried in the Corsier-sur-Vevey cemetery.
Depois de ler quatro capítulos, parei para recomeçar a leitura em outra ocasião em casa. Por quê? Porqueos relatos são muito tristes, muito! Charlie lembra de diversas ocasiões quando seu irmão estava viajando e sua mãe necessitava ir para o manicômio com urgência e ele, menino, a levava, voltando para casa onde ficava sozinho sem nada para comer, com uma tristeza profunda...
After reading four chapters I "gave in", planning to restart the reading on another occasion at home... Why? Because what he tells is very, very sad! He remembers when his brother was traveling and his mother needed to go to the hospital with urgency and he, a boy, took her; after that he came back home alone with nothing to eat, terribly sad...
